Palau Koror – The Palau Bureau of Revenue and Taxation (BR&T) announced the issuance of tax refunds and social assistance to approximately 3,802 eligible Palau citizens. The total amount of $1.8 million in grants will be distributed next week.

Expand tax refunds and add new social subsidies

The allocation follows the passage of Republic of Palau Public Law (RPPL) 11-34, the 2024 Supplemental Budget Act, which expands tax rebate eligibility to include those with annual incomes between $15,000 and $30,000. It also creates a new social allowance of $480 per year for retirees.

Salary tax refund

Starting today, July 26, 2024, approximately 1,802 eligible Palauan employees (who earned between $15,000 and $30,000 in 2023) will receive a wage and salary tax (WST) refund of $480, totaling approximately $845,000. The refund will be made at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

To request a refund, employees must present a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport) and sign a certification form to verify their information and acknowledge receipt of the refund. Refunds are automatically processed once employees submit Form W-2 to BR&T.

Note for Previous Refund Recipients

Those who have previously received a nonprofit donation or tuition refund will have their current refund adjusted to reflect the amount previously issued.

Social assistance for retirees and disabled persons

On Monday, July 29, 2024, BR&T will distribute social assistance grants of $480 to approximately 2,000 retired Palauan citizens, including those receiving disability insurance benefits. According to Director Elway Ikeda, the total amount to be distributed to retirees is approximately $970,000. The distribution will also take place at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Eligible recipients of Palau Republic of Social Security (ROP SS) benefits will automatically receive their payments. For those unable to pick up their checks in person, payments may be picked up by a designated representative with a power of attorney or written authorization and valid identification.

Dual national employees

Palauan dual nationals, especially those born outside of Palau and earning between $15,000 and $30,000 in 2023, are also eligible for a $480 WST refund. Due to the additional citizenship verification process, their refund may be slightly delayed and will not be available during the initial distribution period on July 26.

To ensure proper distribution, these employees must submit proof of citizenship, such as a passport issued by the Republic of Palau, an official birth certificate, or other relevant documentation. Once citizenship is confirmed and the employer submits a W-2, BR&T will process the refund and provide an estimated payment date.
