The National Assembly of Palau is pleased to announce that Taiwan will generously donate US$25,000 to support the 4th Pacific Islands Parliamentary Group (PIPG) Conference. The conference will be held in Palau from August 14 to 16, 2024, with the theme “Human Development in Oceania: How Can Legislatures Strengthen People-Centered Security for Pacific Islanders?”

This important event marked the first time that PIPG has met in a North Pacific country, with 18 member legislatures participating. In addition, the Pacific Island Legislatures Alliance (APIL), a group of North Pacific legislatures, was invited to attend as observers.

In the current global context, with the increasing challenges faced by Pacific countries, this initiative is essential to strengthening regional solidarity and addressing common challenges. The conference aims to promote dialogue, cooperation and collective action among Pacific island legislatures to ensure that the voices and interests of Pacific islanders are represented and protected.

This contribution is in addition to the assistance of the Government of Japan, which generously funded most of the costs of the Conference through the Strengthening Legislative Institutions in Pacific Island Countries (SLIP) project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

House Speaker Sabino Anastasio and Senate President Hawkens Bowles thanked Taiwan for its support, saying: “We are very grateful for the contribution of the Republic of China (Taiwan). This support not only helped us with some of the logistical aspects of the meeting, but also symbolizes the strong and enduring partnership between Palau and the Republic of China (Taiwan).”

This is our shared commitment to promoting stability, prosperity and

Sustainable Development in the Pacific”.

The Palau National Assembly looks forward to a successful and impactful conference that brings together legislators from across the Pacific to address common challenges and opportunities. We are confident that this event will pave the way for greater cooperation and solidarity among our nations.
