Germany reportedly deported some Afghans to Afghanistan on Friday.

This is the first large-scale expulsion of Afghans by Germany since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021.

German government spokesman Stephan Hibstreit described the Afghan citizens as criminals but gave no further details.

Germany, like other Western countries, has no diplomatic relations with the Taliban.

The number of Afghans deported to Afghanistan is said to be 28. Germany took this action after three people were killed and eight injured at a festival in the city of Solingen.

The suspect in the attack was a Syrian citizen who had applied for asylum in Germany. Following this and similar incidents, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated that many refugees living in the country would be deported back to Afghanistan and Syria.

In an interview with Germany’s ZDF television channel on Tuesday, he said there was no reason for those convicted of serious crimes to stay in the country.

He added: “We believe that the possibility of returning to Afghanistan will be offered and we want to do the same for Syria.”
