As August drew to a close, the Kingdom of Tonga hosted the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting (#PIFLM53). The Council of Pacific Regional Organisations (CROP) member Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) attended this important event to encourage and highlight solidarity and cooperation across the region.

The conference is not only about addressing the region’s challenges, but also about celebrating our shared identity and resilience. The theme of this year’s conference is “Transforming Resilience, Building Back Better”, which is very relevant to the ongoing work of SPTO.

The traditional music and dance showcased at the opening ceremony highlighted Tonga’s rich cultural heritage and served as a powerful reminder that resilience means more than just survival, it means embracing and preserving our uniqueness even in the face of adversity.

CROP members had the privilege of observing the Pacific ACP Dialogue and discussions among Small Island States and Territories. The Pacific ACP Group Leaders Dialogue focused on securing support for the #SamoaAgreement, highlighting the importance of the Pacific’s global partnerships, especially with the EU.

Meanwhile, Pacific Small Island States (SIS) leaders met to explore new approaches to work and partnerships and consider recommendations from the recent SIS review. Revitalizing and reconnecting small island states remains a priority, along with strengthening their recognition and integration within regional frameworks.
