Samoan man charged with burning house while doing odd jobs
One of the nine defendants in the arson attack on a factory in Faleula has fled the country to take up part-time work while his trial is set to take place.
Mr Tetele Pii Lepa, or PJ as he is known, has appealed to the Supreme Court three times.
Last week, the Supreme Court issued summonses to PJ and Vaialia Paneta, who were summoned several times in their cases but did not appear.
Lepale was due to appear in court this week along with other accused in the case, including Henry Fretton, Tuaolo Palagi Pii, Vaialia Paneta, Vaiao Makelusa Levasa, Blessed Fretton, William Fretton, Teofilo FEtaiai Pii and Mauaiseasao Teofilo.
However, Lupematasila Iliganoa Atoa, a lawyer for the government and the Attorney General’s Office, confirmed that Lepal had left the country.
Honorable Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Rom asked the eight whether they have found lawyers.
One of the defendants responded that they were waiting for a response from the court office on their request for “legal aid.”
The nine were charged in June of the year the incident occurred.
Their case has now been adjourned for two weeks. But the government lawyers have sought an arrest warrant for Lepal, but the honourable judge said that no arrest warrant can be issued if a summons has not been issued to the person.
