One person confirmed dead in Valley plane crash
The Vanuatu Tourism Board has confirmed to RNZ that one person was killed in an incident in Vanuatu earlier this week when a plane crashed on a farm near Port Vila.
According to a spokesperson for the Tourism Bureau who was on board the Air Vanuatu taxi on the day of the accident, there were five people on board the aircraft.
The man, who was detained in hospital, died as a result of the accident on Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Department of Air Transport (CAA). The CAA did not comment as the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
This is the second air taxi incident this year. The first occurred when Vanua Levu’s finance minister, John Salonga, was on a business trip.
According to witnesses, the plane attempted to land at the Montmartre playground but changed its destination because the playground was packed with students, and then allegedly skidded into a field.
Paul Pio, director of the tourism office, said only locals were on the plane.
