After missing out on a podium finish at the Tokyo Olympics, Yolo had said he would “go for the top” in Paris.
His acrobatic and technically difficult routines proved to be very successful, scoring higher than the 14.766 he achieved in the qualifying round.
“I’m so excited. I’m so grateful for this medal and thankful to God. He’s protecting me like he always does,” said Yulo, who has a chance to win another medal in Sunday’s vault final.
“He gave me the strength to be able to perform like this and perform so well.”
Xiao Ruoteng of China, bronze medalist in the floor exercise at the Tokyo Olympics, finished last with 13.933 points in the eight-person final after jumping out of bounds after his opening jump.
Xiao had been pushing for a gold medal to complement his silver in the men’s team event and bronze in the all-around at the Paris Olympics.
