In an interview with local media, Lakta said that among illegal immigrants, citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria and Bangladesh predominate. He assessed that illegal immigration is currently under control, adding that the situation in temporary accommodation centers for illegal immigrants is under constant monitoring, including checks on people living there.
They are kept for a maximum of one month
During the summer, up to 1,500 people live in these centers near Sarajevo and in the Una Sana cantonal area. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), illegal immigrants stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for up to a month, as their only goal is to try to cross the Croatian border and continue their journey to the West.
The International Organization for Migration previously conducted a survey on illegal immigrants, and respondents said that more than 70% had attempted to cross the border at least once but failed and were stopped by the police.
1,766 foreign citizens deported
Lakta said that Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently fully fulfilling its obligations under the agreements with other countries on the readmission or acceptance of illegal immigrants. This year, Bosnia and Herzegovina has repatriated 1,800 illegal immigrants who tried to cross the borders of neighboring countries.
At the same time, 1,766 foreign citizens were expelled, of whom four were found to be a threat to Bosnia’s national security.
