Our heroes were born in the great feat of the insurrection of August 10, 1809, without a doubt based on the most precious principles of freedom and justice, inspired by great thinkers and Creole patriots such as Eugenio Espejo, for whom being representatives of the people constituted a revolutionary, autonomous act. The “Quiteña Revolution” was born in the family of the woman Manuela Cañizares, and at the same time the Sovereign Government Council was created (with the patriots Marqués de Selva Alegre, Juan Pío Montúfar, Bishop José Cuero y Caicedo and Antonio Ante) that would replace the power imposed by the King. Obviously, the Spanish responded with brutal force, the brave people of Quito took to the streets to liberate their patriots, and the act of suffering and oppression first ended with the massacre of heroes on August 2, 1810. The “first cry of independence” had begun, and the “Light of America” in Quito would never be extinguished from then on.
