Oshakati Town Council’s financial assistance efforts have resulted in a significant reduction in customer debt.

As of the end of June, the total debt owed by customers to Oshakati Town Council was nearly N$61 million, a decrease of nearly N$20 million compared to the same period last year.

The news was revealed by the commission’s spokesperson Katarina Kamari in a press release issued on Friday.

According to Kamari, the board’s debt was N80,224,301 as of June 30, 2023. As of June 30 this year, the figure has dropped to N60,897,122.

The council announced that the improvement was largely due to the appointment of Redforce Debt Management and the council’s interest waiver initiative.

Last September, parliament announced the waiver of interest, and Kamari confirmed on Friday that the move will continue.

“In an ongoing effort to reduce the financial burden on residents, Oshakati Town Council is pleased to announce that it will continue to forgive all residents’ outstanding council account payments,” she said.

“This measure is part of the council’s commitment to provide relief to residents, particularly during these tough economic times. Last September, the council announced it would waive all interest accrued on all council accounts,” she added.

The account has been settled

Mr Kamali said the council made the decision to encourage all account holders to pay their municipal service bills on time and allow all customers with outstanding balances on their accounts to repay their debts.

“As a result, most account holders have settled their outstanding bills. Continuing this exercise is the council’s way of helping the community meet its financial commitments and not be crushed by interest charges,” she noted.

The interest relief on municipal accounts applies to everyone, including homes, schools, businesses, non-profits, community organizations, churches, governments and parastatals.
