The Office of the Leader of the Opposition today called on reputable law enforcement agencies such as the FBI to investigate alleged corruption in the police force

The Opposition said in a statement that the PPP/CP government’s refusal to investigate Second Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo following allegations of bribery and corruption in a Vice News documentary has opened the door for corruption to flourish in Guyanese society, particularly in the Guyana Police Force. The Opposition has warned that the government is opening the door for corruption to flourish in Guyanese society, particularly in the Guyana Police Force.

“Recent revelations of corruption at the highest levels of the Guyana Police Force and Ministry of Interior are the latest manifestation of corruption being engaged in and condoned at the highest levels of government,” the opposition said, adding that it does not bode well for Guyana’s image.

“It is time to purge corrupt officials and depoliticize the police force, returning it to its status as a professional law enforcement agency rather than a hub of corruption, illegality and lawlessness,” the opposition said.

It accused the police of being unable to escape corruption and lawlessness because they themselves are corrupt and lawless.

“In view of the above, the opposition demands that reputable law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation be called upon to investigate corruption in the GPF and other government agencies,” the statement said.
