The developments within the United Change Movement (UTM) mark a tragic and depressing chapter in Malawi politics that would no doubt make the late Saulos Chilima weep in his grave.
Chilima, the party’s founder and former vice president, has dedicated much of his political career to building UTM into a vehicle for progressive change in Malawi.
Yet, barely a month after his tragic death in a Malawi Defence Forces plane crash in Chikangawa Forest, the party he nurtured with such passion appears to be being disbanded and betrayed by opportunists driven by selfish interests rather than the collective good.
The claim that UTM was “sold off for a pittance” highlights how easily these political amateurs can discredit Chilima’s political legacy.
After his death, rather than banding together to honor his vision and continue his work, these individuals seized the opportunity to advance their own personal agendas.
Such actions are a blatant betrayal of the principles Chilima stood for and reveal a disturbing tendency for political expediency to trump a genuine commitment to the public interest.
Worse still, these actors shamelessly exploited the commemoration of Chilima by organizing political rallies under the guise of candlelight memorials.
This use of the late leader’s name for political gain is not only disrespectful but also undermines the genuine grief and respect many Malawians have for Chilima.
It’s a manipulative tactic designed to conceal their true intentions and appeal to the public’s sympathy while they pull the strings behind the scenes to consolidate their own position of power.
The situation was further complicated by the involvement of Dalitso Kabambe, who was reportedly about to leave the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and was suspected of providing substantial financial support to the UTM.
Kabembe’s financial promises and his ambition to run for the presidency at the UTM congress have raised questions about the party’s integrity and future direction.
The influx of money and shifting loyalties suggest that UTM risks becoming a pawn in a larger political game driven by money rather than ideological commitment.
Now, the true face of this invisible financier has been revealed, symbolizing the secretive and transactional nature of this political manipulation, especially Kabembe, who was the one who looted public resources in the previous government.
Injecting money into the political process under such dubious circumstances threatens to erode the democratic principles that political parties like the UTM are supposed to uphold.
The situation highlights a broader problem in Malawian politics: the vulnerability of political campaigns to corruption, and the corrosive influence of money on the democratic process.
At this critical juncture, the true supporters of UTM and the citizens of Malawi at large must remain vigilant and demand accountability.
They must work to uphold Chilima’s legacy and champion transparent and ethical leadership in the party, epitomised by Vice President Michael Usi.
The principles of democracy, integrity and service to the people that Chilima championed should not be sacrificed on the altar of political ambition and economic gain.
Usi was the designated choice because Chilima chose him as his running mate ahead of the 2029 presidential elections, and if he wins the elections, “Manganya” could become the country’s vice president.
It is unfortunate that officials like UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati and Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala are engaging in prostitution, which is an insult to the lost spirit of Chilima.
Instead of praising President Lazarus Chakwera for respecting Chilima’s wishes, Kaliati and Njawara are busy hooking up with Kabembe, who is likely to bring UTM back to the DPP.
One tends to believe that Chilima knew how toxic some members of the UTM executive committee were and that is why he did not secure high-level positions for them in government.
In conclusion, the events unfolding within the UTM are a poignant reminder of the fragility of political movements and how easily they can be undermined by unscrupulous actors.
The spirit of the late Chilima no doubt cries out over these developments and he calls on all those who believe in his vision to stand firm against these opportunistic forces.
Only through collective vigilance and a renewed commitment to ethical political engagement can the true legacy of UTM and Chilima be respected and preserved. Otherwise, the party will be sold out.
