Muscat: The Oman Energy Association (OPAL) – the umbrella organisation of energy companies and service providers in the Sultanate of Oman – and the Environment Agency (EA) came together yesterday to sign the Green Alliance initiative. The landmark agreement marks the collaborative efforts of the private sector, mainly in the energy sector, and the EA in investing in the reforestation sector.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Agency, and Eng Mohammed bin Hamoud al Naabi, CEO of OPAL.
Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri said: “The signing of this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation between government agencies and private sector institutions to achieve national environmental goals in line with Oman Vision 2040. We are confident that this cooperation will bring tangible positive results that will contribute to protecting the environment and improving the sustainability of its natural resources.” The Green Alliance initiative aims to increase the economic value of environmental resources and is aligned with the ambitious goals of Oman Vision 2040. It focuses on building partnerships to protect the environment and sustain natural resources by increasing vegetation cover and investing in carbon emissions through afforestation projects. The initiative is also a key step in supporting companies in the energy sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Engineer Mohammed bin Hammoud Al Nabi commented: “The Green Alliance initiative is an important step towards carbon neutrality and strengthening environmental sustainability in the Sultanate of Oman. We are proud of our partnership with the Environment Agency and are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that the initiative is successful and achieves its goals. We are confident that this collaboration will not only protect the environment and achieve zero carbon neutrality, but will also enhance economic value to society and create new opportunities for investment in environmental projects.” By investing in the planting of wild trees, the alliance seeks to increase vegetation cover in Oman, which will not only help sequester carbon but will also bring significant economic returns through carbon credits. These efforts are expected to increase environmental awareness in the community and encourage wider participation in environmental sustainability efforts.
The Green Alliance initiative is rooted in a national effort led by the Environment Agency to plant 10 million trees across Oman. On July 5, 2022, the Environment Agency convened a meeting of companies to discuss the framework of the initiative, chaired by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali al Amri. The meeting focused on how these companies, whether operating in Oman or holding local investments, can actively contribute to the success of the initiative.
The initiative is aligned with the broader goals of Oman Vision 2040, which aims to transform Oman into a green economy. By maximizing the use of natural resources and limiting carbon emissions, the Green Alliance initiative represents a strategic effort to enhance environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth. Through these efforts, Oman is taking a decisive step towards achieving a balanced and sustainable future, reinforcing its commitment to global environmental standards.
