Muscat: Oman, represented by the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), will host the 35th GCC National Olympic Committee Heads’ Meeting from October 13 to 16, which will be preceded by the 97th Executive Office Meeting (Secretary General of the GCC National Olympic Committees) and the second meeting of the Women’s Sports Advisory Committee.
The meeting will discuss many topics and take necessary decisions in favor of Gulf sports. In addition to several representatives of the sports world of the GCC countries, many important sports figures will also attend the meeting.
The UAE Olympic Committee is making all preparations to receive guests from Oman and is also preparing for three meetings: the meeting of presidents and secretaries-general of the Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states will be held on October 15-16, and the meeting of the Sports Advisory Committee of the Women’s Committee will be held on October 14.
A working group has been set up to follow up the preparations and provide all means to make this important Gulf event a success. A media centre will also be set up at the delegation residence to communicate the activities of these meetings through media professionals accompanying the GCC countries’ delegations and assist them in their media tasks.
Promoting sports in the GCC
The last meeting of the presidents of the GCC National Olympic Committees (the 34th meeting) held in Saudi Arabia adopted a series of decisions aimed at promoting and supporting the sports cause in the GCC and launching joint work. The meeting approved the renaming of the GCC Sports Dispute Resolution Bureau to the Sports Arbitration Bureau and approved its budget proposal. The meeting also agreed to end the work of the Organizing Committee and set up four advisory committees to organize and follow up joint sports work, namely the Sports Committee, the Women’s Sports Committee, the Athletes Committee and the Paralympic Sports Committee, which are directly subordinate to the Executive Office. The heads of these committees will be appointed by the presidency of the GCC countries.
The presidents of the GCC NOCs also approved a five-year calendar of sporting events, including the first GCC Youth Sports Conference, to be held in the UAE next year, and the GCC Sports Championships and Indoor Games, scheduled for Saudi Arabia in 2024. In addition to the Games, the GCC will hold the Beach Games in Oman in 2025, the 4th GCC Sports Conference in Qatar in 2026, and the 3rd Beach Games in Bahrain in 2027. The GCC also approved the holding of a joint club championship for league champions in team events, but the secretariat must coordinate with the GCC NOCs.
The meeting also agreed to add a new article to the internal regulations and the regulations on joint work in the field of sports, opening the way for countries outside the GCC framework to participate in courses, events, sports activities, etc. This is a measure taken in implementation of the Supreme Council’s Royal Directive on strengthening cooperation and partnership with international organizations in the field of sports.
