The five defendants who appeared in court to explain their responsibilities in the case, prosecuted for fraudulently reducing the supply of tap water at the National Water and Sanitation Office (ONEA), were sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of 500,000 CFA francs, all suspended. The judgment was made by the Ouaga First High Court this Saturday, August 24, 2024.

The case was originally scheduled for August 20, 2024, and the defendants appeared in court on the 17th of the same month. A week later, the case was sent back for deliberation and the first instance came to a conclusion. On Saturday, August 24, 2024, the defendants Idrissa, Kalifa, Pamoussa, Gaston and Issiaka were sentenced to 6 months in prison and a fine of 500,000 CFA francs, all suspended.

Let’s recall that in this case, the ONEA Central Regional Director, Moussa Siemdé, estimated that the financial losses incurred by the five ONEA institutions in Ouagadougou exceeded 150 million CFA francs; 2023. The court found them guilty of fraudulent reduction of tap water, initially declaring the partial establishment of the statutes of the ONEA civil parties; subsequently, ordered each defendant to pay damages.

Idrissa and Kalifa will have to pay 2,026,180 CFA francs; Pamousa, 2,271,667 CFA francs; Gaston 20,626,644 CFA francs; and Isiaka 20,104,000 CFA francs. In ordering the provisional execution of the decision, the court set a judicial deadline of three months. The sealed materials were confiscated and each defendant was required to pay 500,000 CFA francs to cover the costs incurred but not included in the fees.
