One person was killed and eight others were injured in a mass shooting at a wake in St. Catherine, Jamaica, early Wednesday morning.
A memorial service was scheduled to be held near the Point Hill community to honor the late grandmother of reggae artist Christopher Martin but was interrupted when two gunmen opened fire.
The incident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. when the gunmen walked along a dirt road and approached a house where a group of mourners had gathered. Without warning, they began shooting indiscriminately, causing panic in the crowd.
Among those shot was 34-year-old Oniel Spencer of Point Hill, who initially managed to escape the first wave of gunfire. Unfortunately, when he tried to leave his hiding place and return home, he was ambushed and fatally shot. Spencer was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Eight other participants were injured in the attack, two of them seriously. One was treated and released from hospital.

St. Catherine North police are investigating but have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
The community remains on edge as authorities work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Christopher Martin later spoke about the incident on his Instagram account, condemning the violence.
“My heart is heavy this morning as I reflect on the tragedy that unfolded last night at the funeral of my beloved grandmother. She was a woman of deep faith and endless sacrifice who taught me the true meaning of love and community. It is heartbreaking to see the violence cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of peace and remembrance,” Martin wrote.
“I condemn all forms of violence and extend my deepest sympathies to the families affected by this senseless act. I pray that those involved will come forward and that our community will support the authorities in dispensing justice. Jamaica, we must do better. Life is too precious to be consumed by violence. Let us choose peace,” he added.
