Omani Para-athletes gear up for 2024 West Asian Para Games

Muscat: Oman has announced that it will participate in the 4th West Asian Para Games, which will be held in Sharjah, UAE from January 27 to February 3. The West Asian Para Games will see the participation of 12 countries with a total of 513 participants, including 382 athletes, 131 coaches and administrators. The sports include weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, goalball, wheelchair basketball, petanque and weightlifting.

The Omani delegation, consisting of 60 athletes, administrators, technical staff and media personnel, will compete in five national teams: weightlifting, goalball, wheelchair basketball, petanque and athletics. Dr. Mansoor bin Sultan al Touqi, President of the Oman Paralympic Committee, will lead the delegation. In Sharjah, the Oman Paralympic Committee aims to achieve positive results and qualifications for the Paris Paralympic Games. The national Paralympic athletes received intensive training at the facilities of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Center and Hope Club in Bausher. The training was guided by professional coaches from Tunisia and the national coaches and assistant coaches of the five teams representing Oman.

The teams competed in high spirits, especially in individual events, led by athletics, where top Omani champions including Mohammed al Mashaiki and Mohammed al Qasmi competed in various events alongside other athletes. The athletics team for the 2024 West Asian Para Games was represented by administrator Rahma al Hajri, coach Sania Hussein and coach Abdullah Anbri, with assistants Auf al Ma’amari and Asad Kalni. The athletics team included Mohammed al Mashaiki, Mutasim al Saadi, Rawan al Hasni, Fawzi al Habishi, Mahna Awlad Thani, Mohammed al Qasmi, Talib al Balushi, Taha al Harrasi, Qusai al Rawahi, Saif al Muqbali, Hatem al Zadjali, Saara al Anbouri and Rayya al Obri.

In weightlifting, Fadel al-Hadi and Hani Ramadan will represent Oman. The boccia team includes administrator Adnan al Owaidi, coach Widad al Dhaifi, and players Mohammed al Wahaibi, Sultan al Wahaibi, Sameer al Sulaimi, Mohammed al Zaabi, Mohammed al Muharrami, Mutasim al Muharrami, Reya al Harthy and Arwa al Smiley.

The gateball team is managed by Akram al Maawali, coached by Asaad al Dhahli and assistant coached by Asaad al Salmi. The team includes Khamis al Salti, Emad al Hajji, Rashid al Siyabi, Abdullah al Raisi, Ahmed al Noubi and Saqr al Qasmi.

The wheelchair basketball team is headed by Mohammed al Hinai as committee secretary, Musa al Siyabi as coach and Hamoud al Umairi as assistant. The team consists of 12 players, Zaher al Atbi, Younis al Toubi, Hafiz Awlad Ahmed, Nabil al Kindi, Ali al Ghassani, Ahmed al Numani, Maktoum al Muqbali, Khamis al Masoudi, Rashid al Muqbali, Amjad al Wahaibi, Ali al Ghafri and Badr Tamimi.
