Muscat: The Omani men’s and women’s national hockey teams under 18 have concluded a training camp held at the Oman Hockey Stadium in Al Amerat from August 6 to 16. The camp was attended by 74 players from various hockey preparation centres in Oman, who underwent 10 days of comprehensive training under the supervision of two integrated technical and administrative bodies.
The training programme, led by Dutch coach Siegfried Ekman and Pakistan coach Mohammad Waqas Sharif, focuses on developing the players’ technical and physical qualities, as well as psychological preparation and analysing their performances in domestic friendlies.
The camp was considered as one of the important activities in the national hockey team’s preparation plan as it decided to approve the preliminary rosters of the men’s and women’s national teams under 18. The players were ready for the upcoming domestic and international championships, reflecting the great commitment of the Oman Hockey Association (OHA) to develop the sport at the age group level.
Speaking on the conclusion of the camp, national team director Mohammed al Batrani said the camp achieved important technical and administrative goals, most notably the approval of the initial roster for the under-18 national team, in addition to the formation of the first under-18 women’s team and the first under-16 men’s team, a first in the history of Omani hockey.
Al Batrani added that the camp includes theoretical courses and practical application sessions, in addition to psychological preparation and match analysis sessions. The camp also aims to increase players’ awareness of the history of Omani hockey and introduce them to the rules and details of the game.
As a groundbreaking initiative, the camp included the “Co-existence of Coaches” program, which aims to develop the capacity of coaches working in sports clubs and athlete preparation centers. Nine coaches from different provinces participated in the program, who had the opportunity to communicate directly with national team coaches and exchange experiences and knowledge in the field of hockey training. The program allowed them to learn about the latest training methods and apply them practically on the players during the camp.
OHA intends to develop this program in the upcoming training camps to include more trainers. Al Batrani stressed the importance of keeping the media informed of OHA’s efforts, noting that the association intends to hold a technical meeting soon to evaluate the training camp and formulate the next training plan based on the evaluation results. He added that the national team is preparing to participate in their first continental championship in Abu Dhabi next December, and will conduct multiple training camps before participating in the competition.
