Muscat: The much-anticipated Saham Agricultural City (SAC) project will be established in the Sultanate of Oman, sponsored by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (Oman National Spatial Strategy) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. The ambitious plan aims to redefine agricultural and urban development in the region, focusing on food security, agri-economic innovation and sustainable urban planning.
Covering an area of 65 square kilometers, Santanak City Center will be a pioneering example of agro-urbanism, with 70% dedicated to agriculture and 30% to urban development. The city aims to provide food for 25,000 people per year, using advanced technologies such as hydroponics, aeroponics and fish farming to ensure efficient and sustainable food production.
Saham was chosen for its high-quality soil, well-developed infrastructure, abundant water resources and suitable climate. The city will extend from the Al Batinah Highway to nearby areas of Saham Governorate, blending seamlessly into the region’s landscape.
Surbana Jurong, a Singapore-based government consultancy focused on infrastructure and urban development, recently presented the master plan at a one-day workshop attended by government officials and representatives from civil society organisations.
In a recent article, Aflah al Farei, project lead at SAC Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Consultants, highlighted the project’s alignment with Oman Vision 2040. “The master plan project marks a key step towards achieving Oman Vision 2040 by prioritizing sustainable agriculture, technological innovation, and community well-being. The insightful workshop was actively participated in by representatives from the government and private sector, as well as experts and investors from various fields.”
Rashid al Yahyai, Research Advisor and Professor at Sultan Qaboos University, shared insights from the first workshop of the project. “Today, we launched the first workshop for stakeholders of the national project Saham Agricultural City (SAC). We held a roundtable discussion on the most pressing issues related to the project, the growers’ experiences, and the aspirations of the people of the Northern Governorate of Al Batinah. SAC will be located in an area of approximately 100 square kilometers and will contain agricultural and civil units, a modern urban development unique to Oman.”
The SAC project focuses on the pillars of food security, agri-economic innovation, food and nutrition research, smart agriculture, climate resilience, urban agriculture and sustainable urban planning. These elements form the backbone of the plan, ensuring that the city becomes not only a centre of agricultural excellence but also a model for modern urban living.
