PARIS: Omani athletes and swimmers will arrive at the Paris Olympic Village on Thursday for the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will open on Friday and last until August 11.
The national shooting team arrived at the Olympic Village on Wednesday for training, where the administrative team, headed by Omani Chef de Mission Ali bin Salim Al-Busafi, has completed all necessary arrangements.
Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Zubair, President of the Oman Olympic Committee and head of the Omani delegation to the 2024 Paris Olympics, said that this participation continues Oman’s tradition of participating in the Olympic Games since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He stressed that this participation is of great significance in showcasing the development and prosperity of Omani sports. He urged the athletes to represent Oman with honor and achieve the best results.
Zubair congratulated all the athletes who will have the honour of representing Oman at the Paris Olympics, including sprinters Ali Barooshi and Mazoon Alaoui, shooter Sayyed Khatri and swimmer Issa Aladawi (aquatics). He praised the great efforts of the athletes and their coaching teams and thanked the presidents of the sports associations for their continuous and diligent follow-up in all preparations and qualification events.
Noting that the Olympic Games are one of the most important sporting events, athletes aspire to participate and achieve the best records and personal milestones, the IOC President said the Games provide an ideal environment to interact with the world’s top athletes and compete in the best facilities based on international standards.
Zubair thanked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), headed by His Highness Sheikh Saeed bin Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, for its support, which he hoped would help boost Oman’s strength in sports and raise the flag of Oman on the international stage.
Zubair also thanked His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for his generous patronage and continuous support to the sports and youth sectors in Oman.
Taha bin Suleiman Al Kishri, Secretary General of the IOC and member of the official Omani delegation to the Paris Olympic Games, arrived in Paris on Tuesday. He reviewed the final preparations. He said that the administrative delegation will do its utmost to prepare everything for the arrival of athletes, technical and administrative staff. He highly valued the great efforts and continuous cooperation of the Omani Ambassador to France and members of the Omani Embassy to ensure effective participation in the Olympic Games. He expressed his gratitude for their role and the constant communication with them during the sports delegation’s visit to France for the Olympic Games.
Al Kishri said the official opening ceremony of the Games will be held on Friday on the Seine River in Paris, and will be attended by several Omani officials, including Basil bin Ahmed Al Rawas, Undersecretary of Sports and Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Culture, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Oraimi, Oman’s ambassador to France, Sheikh Khalid Mohammed Al Zubair, President of the Oman Olympic Committee and head of the Omani delegation to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, His Highness Saeed Azaen bin Qais Al Saeed, Vice President of the Oman Olympic Committee, and other officials.
The Secretary General of the International Olympic Committee expressed his best wishes to all athletes and national team representatives, hoping that they will achieve better results.
Ali bin Salim Al-Busafi, head of the Omani delegation, praised the strong cooperation given by the organizers of the Paris Olympics, who completed all bookings and requirements before the arrival of the Omani delegation.
Al Busafi expressed his appreciation for the commitment of the national team representatives to provide all the necessary data and information to complete the various procedures related to accommodation, transportation and participation in the official opening ceremony. He urged all national team members to comply with the existing procedures to ensure their safety within the Olympic Village. Al Busafi held several meetings on Wednesday with organizers from various departments to finalize all matters related to the safety and reception of national team representatives and ensure their smooth entry into the Olympic Village.
Al Khatri is ready
First-time Olympic shooter Saeed Al Khatri will compete in the men’s skeet shooting event at the Châteauroux shooting centre on July 29 and 30.
Swimmer Issa Al Adavi will compete in her second consecutive Olympics after competing in Tokyo 2020, when she competes in the 100m freestyle at the Paris Aquatics Centre on July 30. Sprinter Mazoon Al Alawi will compete in her third Olympics after competing in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, when she competes in the 100m at the Stade de France on August 2. Sprinter Ali Al Barooshi will make his Olympic debut in the same event at the same venue on August 3.
