Outside the Stade de France, modern pentathlete El Gendi successfully upgraded his silver medal from the Tokyo Olympics to a medal.

The 24-year-old, who finished 17 seconds ahead of the start with a strong final performance in the final Laser Run, said he was delighted to be on the podium after three years of racing in Japan.

“It means a lot because the past three years of playing have been very difficult for me and have brought me a lot of physical and mental problems, including injuries and pain,” he said.

“This is the only gold medal Egypt has won in these Olympics and I am very proud to receive this medal.”

Earlier on Saturday, Egyptian weightlifter Sara Ahmed won the silver medal in the women’s 81kg category.

Ahmed, a former world champion in the 76kg category and flag bearer at the opening ceremony, lifted an impressive 151kg in her second attempt in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total of 268kg.

“I wanted to win the gold medal, but I am happy and content with the silver medal,” said the 26-year-old.

“In the future, this experience will make me better and take me to the top.”

Elsewhere, Ivorian taekwondo athlete Cheick Sallah Cisse won a bronze medal in the men’s over-80kg category.
