New faces on University Council

Okanagan College recently welcomed two new members to its Board of Governors.

Sheri Hamilton and Gurjit Chand were appointed to the committee for one-year terms beginning July 31. They will serve with chair Dale Safinuk, vice chairs Andrea Alexander, JoAnn Fowler, Dustyn Baulkham and Cindy Battersby, and ex-officio members Okanagan College president Neil Fassina and board of education chair Jillian Garrett.

Hamilton is very familiar with Okanagan College, having served as chair of the college’s finance committee and as a foundation director since 2018.

Chand has over 15 years of public and private sector HR experience. She has worked with the City of Vancouver, UBC Okanagan, Interior Health, and the City of Kelowna.

Hamilton and Chand replace Juliette Cunningham and Tina Lee, who each served for six years.

Two faculty members and two students were elected to the board for three-year and one-year terms, respectively. Roger Wheeler and Kevin Fukushima will represent the faculty, while Benjamin Harris and Sukhmeet Kaur will represent the students.

“We are excited to have such talented individuals with both community and college backgrounds and experience join the Okanagan College Board of Directors,” Saffynuk said in a press release. “All of the newly appointed and elected members will support our board in guiding the strategic direction of Okanagan College and its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education to students of all cultures and backgrounds in a supportive and inclusive campus environment.”

The Board meets quarterly to discuss the management, administration and control of the property, revenues, expenditures, business and affairs of the agency.
