Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Okinga has expressed grave concern over the growing calls for President William Ruto to resign, warning that it could destabilize the country.
Citing constitutional provisions, Dr Okinga pointed out that President Ruto’s resignation would automatically usher in Deputy President Rigati Gachagua to the presidency, which he strongly criticised.
At a press conference in Kisumu on Sunday, July 14, 2024, Dr. Oburu was unequivocal in his criticism of Vice President Gachagua, describing him as the “worst” leader who, in his opinion, could exacerbate the challenges facing the country.
“While they are all bad leaders, Gachagua had the audacity to publicly declare the state as a shareholder entity.” Dr. If asserted.
He said the idea of electing Gachagua as president was dangerous, noting that Kenya’s Kwanza leadership was biased in appointing presidents, favouring members of the two main communities and giving less consideration to other Kenyans.
Senator Siaya stressed that Kenya is facing a critical moment and urged citizens to seriously address the current crisis, which he believes is a test of the country’s unity and peace.
Dr. Oginga expressed deep concern about the possible outcomes and warned that successful protests by Generation Z could lead to intervention by the military, a scenario he warned could mirror what happened in Egypt, Chad, Mali, Guinea, Gabon, Sudan and Niger, threatening to push Kenya back toward dictatorship and jeopardize current democratic gains.
“While popular uprisings are legitimate and led by the people, their success often depends on the military’s decisions.” He said.

Dr. Oginga appealed to world leaders, urging them not to use the current situation to gain political advantage and stressed the need for responsible guidance amid uncertainty.
“This is a rapidly changing situation that requires firm leadership. Leaders cannot just rely on the energy of Generation Z and respond to their views, but must provide constructive guidance to the younger generation of Kenyans,” He asserted.
On political strategy, Dr Oginga disclosed that ODM is ready to participate in the national dialogue and support the broad political arrangement envisioned by President Ruto that could integrate opposition figures into the Kenyan Kwanza government.
He stressed the importance of policy continuity and emphasised the opposition’s commitment to advocating for the implementation of key policies promised to Kenyans ahead of the 2022 general elections, aimed at ensuring stability in the country as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
MP Siaya called on the youths to actively participate in the upcoming elections and be serious in electing capable leaders in 2027, stressing the crucial role they play in shaping Kenya’s future.
