Former President Barack Obama did not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden announced he was ending his reelection bid. In a statement, Obama praised Biden’s “distinguished record of public service” and acknowledged the difficulty of Biden’s decision to step down.
“Joe understands the stakes of this election better than anyone,” Obama said. “For him, the decision to hand over power is undoubtedly one of the most difficult decisions he will ever face.”
Obama said he believed the Democratic Party could select an outstanding candidate and said: “In the days ahead, we will explore uncharted territory.” He also stressed that Biden’s vision of a “generous, prosperous, and united America” must continue to be promoted.
Obama’s decision not to endorse Harris comes after Biden endorsed her shortly after announcing the end of his campaign.
Biden had previously endorsed Harris as his successor, calling it the “best decision” of his presidency and urging Democrats to unite in the upcoming election.
Biden said: “The first decision I made as the 2020 nominee was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. It was the best decision I ever made. Today, I am throwing my full support and endorsement at Kamala as our nominee this year. Democrats – now is the time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s do it together.”
