A new $2.6 billion motorway to Sydney Airport is set to open in five weeks, with drivers being urged to familiarise themselves with the route during its crucial final stage to avoid a repeat of the chaos that unfolded in the days after the Rozelle interchange opened.

To avoid confusion for drivers when the expressway opens, the government has released an animated drive-through showing the signs, lane configurations and exits drivers need to take when the final stretch of the expressway opens.

They show how the gateway will connect the airport to the M8 motorway and WestConnex interchange at St Peters and the wider road network.

The opening of the final stretch of the freeway will test officials’ ability to manage the heavy traffic from the St. Peters intersection to the airport terminal, which can handle more than 100,000 vehicles a day.

Roads Minister John Graham said officials were working closely with Sydney Airport to ensure a smooth launch, but he urged drivers to familiarise themselves with the online animations.

“It will be a welcome freeway for those stuck in traffic near Mascot Airport waiting for their flights to depart, while local communities will also see fewer trucks on their streets,” he said.
