Poplin wins second set

Wake up Australia. Alexey Poplin leads the all-conquering Novak Djokovic by two sets in the third round of the US Open.

The young Australian seeded 28th now faces his toughest challenge yet, beating the Serbian legend for the first time at a Grand Slam.

Now Poplin also had the support of the audience. The 24,000 spectators enjoyed his performance.

Did Poplin hurt his ankle?

Poplin chased a deep shot from the corner but suddenly stopped, limping along with a look of pain on his face.

It looks like an ankle problem, but the joint doesn’t appear to be sprained.

During a break in play, he was rolling his ankle but hadn’t called a trainer yet.

Maybe he tweaked existing problems.

Poplin served for the second set at 6-4, 5-4.

Popyrin holds

Djokovic won some points in the final game on Poplin’s serve, but the Australian kept his composure and served.

Djokovic served for the second set 4-6, 4-5.

Djokovic is in great form

Maybe Poplin prodded the Novak Bear a little too much in this match…

Djokovic was brilliant in the final game, leading 40-15 with a couple of typically winning shots.

But then he missed a shot that could have given him match point.

He held serve and played better, but he no longer seemed to be in control of the match as he had in previous Grand Slams or the 2024 Paris Open.

At least for now.

Popyrin 6-4, serving with Popyrin 4-3.

Popyrin achieves another breakthrough

Poplin broke Djokovic again, this time in the second set.

The match was played at a very fast pace, which seemed to help Poplin, who was able to attack with his powerful shots and put Djokovic on the defensive.

Poplin led 0-40 in the fifth game but then made two unforced errors.

But Djokovic tried to hit the winner over the net, but the ball went wide.

Poplin leads 6-4 and 3-2 and will serve next.

Djokovic serves to lead

Poplin has cooled off a bit – let’s face it, he’s not going to be as hot as he was at the end of the first set.

But he remained correct in the second set and was still on serve.

Djokovic leads 2-1, and Poplin serves next.
