KCNA reported that Kim visited a memorial hall honoring Korean revolutionary soldiers who fought to end Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945, and the Liberation Tower honoring Soviet Red Army soldiers.
North Korea’s founder, Kim Il-sung, grandfather of the current leader, was supported by Soviet General Secretary Joseph Stalin, who declared war on Japan at the end of World War II.
The Soviet Union supported Kim Il-sung’s communist forces, which eventually led to the establishment of North Korea after the country’s liberation in 1948.
North Korean state media made no mention of a blueprint for unification announced on Thursday by South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol, who called for dialogue with Pyongyang and proposed an international conference on human rights in North Korea.
At a time when inter-Korean relations are at their lowest point, Yoon’s blueprint has been met with skepticism by some experts who wonder whether it is realistic to expect Pyongyang to see it as a threat to its regime’s survival.
