SEOUL: North Korea’s Defense Ministry accused the United States and South Korea of stepping up reconnaissance activities near the inter-Korean border and warned that it would take action if its sovereignty and security were violated, the Korean Central News Agency reported on Sunday (May 26).
North Korean Vice Defense Minister Kong Gang Il said that from May 13 to May 24, the United States sent at least 16 RC-135 and U-2S strategic reconnaissance aircraft and RQ-4B drones to fly over the Korean Peninsula.
He also accused the South Korean navy and coast guard of increasing patrol activities and continuously violating maritime borders, escalating military tensions.
Kim Jong-un also criticized South Korea’s propaganda leaflets dropped by balloons, calling it a “dangerous provocation.”
North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea often send balloons containing anti-Pyongyang leaflets, food, medicine, money, mini radios and USB sticks containing South Korean news and TV dramas.
“Even now, the U.S. and South Korean puppet air forces are continuously mobilizing various aircraft almost without time intervals throughout the day to conduct aerial reconnaissance activities at the same level as in wartime,” Kim Jong Un said in a statement carried by KCNA.
He said these activities seriously violated North Korea’s national sovereignty and security and that North Korea would not take “offensive” countermeasures.
Kim Jong-un also said: “When national sovereignty and security interests are violated, we will take immediate action.”
