Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus appointed interim prime minister of Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was named head of an interim government.

A caretaker government has been appointed in the country, which is going through a difficult time due to student protests, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Leader President Mohammed Shahabuddin met with student leaders and stressed the appointment of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus as the head of the interim government.

The rest of the interim government will be announced after talks among the political parties.

Students began protesting in mid-July after Bangladesh decided to allow children of the 1971 independence war to be employed by state-owned companies.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands arrested during the protests.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned following the protests and flew to India in a military helicopter.

Muhammad Yunus, 84, is seen as the main challenger by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and is known as the “patron saint of the poor.”
