Muscat: The Environment Agency issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the capsizing of a tanker 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madraqa in Duqm Governorate.
The statement said that it has been confirmed that the ship is intact and there is no leakage of material at present. Given the current situation, preliminary assessments indicate that leakage is unlikely to occur due to natural factors, and it is expected that the material may spread before reaching the coast of Oman.
The authorities stressed that they are prepared for all possible scenarios and confirmed their ability to manage the situation. A marine agent has been appointed and a specialist company has been commissioned to deal with potential oil spills in case of any emergency.
The Maritime Safety Centre reported that the capsizing of the Comoros-flagged tanker had prompted a coordinated search and rescue operation.
The search and rescue operation has successfully found 10 crew members on the Prestige Falcon tanker, of which 9 survived. Unfortunately, one crew member has died. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing to rescue the remaining crew members on board.
The tanker, named “Prestige Falcon”, capsized while en route to the Yemeni port of Aden.
