Eleven earthquakes were detected near the magma tunnels of the Sundhnjúk crater series in the past 24 hours, and about 90 earthquakes were detected in the past week. Most of them were smaller than size 1.
Ingibjörg Andrea Bergþórsdóttir, a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said the number of earthquakes is increasing day by day, but rarely exceeds 10 to 20 per day.
“We expect it to be in the headlines for the next three to four weeks. There’s always going to be rain and we’ll keep an eye on it. But for now, everything is pretty quiet.”
According to Ingibjargar, Landris is still ongoing and stable. Before the last eruption, more than 50 earthquakes were recorded every day.
Small, short tremors
Scientists from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute are meeting today to discuss the situation and are expected to publish an updated risk assessment after the meeting. The current hazard assessment expires today.
Are there any aftershocks?
“No, we haven’t noticed any aftershocks in the surrounding area. The whole peninsula itself is quite quiet,” Ingibjörg said, adding that some earthquakes were recorded in Reykjaneslig, which was normal.
“Like some short, small earthquakes in Henglin or Mount Brunnistein. But no bigger earthquakes.”
