The Autonomous Union of Magistrates of Niger (SAMAN) has issued a strike notice for July 1, 2 and 3, 2024. The 72-hour protest action, with no minimum service, is scheduled to take place across the country from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
In a press release dated June 26, 2024, Saman condemned the independence of the judiciary as “contrary to principles and values” and called for “an end to the undue interference of executive power in the vesting of judicial power.”
The coalition singled out Governor Kony’s alleged interference in a judicial investigation into a murder and an “illegal” decision by the military’s top brass to lift detention measures against two police officers accused of violence against a magistrate.
These actions, he affirmed, “seriously undermine the principle of separation of powers” and the independence of the judiciary guaranteed by the Constitution and international treaties ratified by Niger.
While reaffirming its “readiness for dialogue”, the alliance called on its members to remain “vigilant, united and mobilized to defend the judiciary.”
The strike takes place against a tense political backdrop in Niger, where power is organized at this stage according to the order of July 28, 2023, which is a transitional period.
