NIA CHARLESTON, Nevis – The Honourable Spencer Brand, Minister of Disaster Management of the Nevis Island Authority (NIA), led a delegation to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) annual Atlantic Hurricane Season Press Conference held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
Minister Brand was accompanied on the visit by Chief Assistant Minister, Mr. Micahail Herbert, Director of the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD), Mr. Brian Dyer and NDMD Communications Officer, Mr. Jack Ngumbah.
“The press conference highlighted the preparedness of CDEMA, St. Kitts and Nevis and the region for what is expected to be an above-normal 2024 hurricane season, and the importance of a coordinated response to what is expected to be a very active hurricane season,” Honorable Brand commented after the event.
He affirmed NIA’s support to CDEMA in promoting Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) in the region.
Elizabeth Riley, Executive Director of CDEMA, and Dr. Terrence Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, hosted the press conference, which was attended online by media representatives from across the region.
Prime Minister Drew expressed his gratitude for CDEMA’s support through the CDM, highlighting that the regional disaster relief agency made a direct contribution of US$164,750.36 last year “to advance disaster risk management in St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Executive Director Riley touched on important issues such as ensuring builders are properly trained and qualified to construct homes that meet specific standards to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and a magnitude 7 earthquake, and ensuring the agency has access to adequate disaster relief supplies.
Meanwhile, St. Kitts and Nevis is preparing to host CDEMA’s 13th Annual Integrated Disaster Management Conference, scheduled for December 2-6, 2024.
