NIA CHARLESTON, Nevis (June 25, 2024) – The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Cabinet has approved a road naming and street numbering policy designed to improve the efficiency of locating properties using street names and numbers.
Nevis Minister of Works, Communications and Physical Planning Spencer Brand said the plan was taking a long time but it was vital it was done in a smart way.
“It has taken some time but our goal is to get it right. I am confident that this road naming policy will help assist our first responders. It also aims to clarify the policy on addressing new projects, rezoning areas, naming new roads, numbering roads, naming or renaming existing roads and introducing address signage,” he said.
Mr. Brand explained that the policy will also ensure uniformity across the island by adding names to all new and proposed subdivisions and previously unnamed roads under construction. This will help a wide range of stakeholders, including emergency medical services (EMS), post offices, courier services, fire and rescue services, law enforcement, telecommunications companies, property owners, tax authorities, utility companies, couriers, and other agencies and service providers.
“The physical plan will announce to the public the designation or change of road names…When a decision is made on the naming or renaming of a road, it must be publicized, it must be published in various newspapers, it must be placed on the NIA website, and any other electronic publication on the island of Nevis.
“I want to highlight those who will be notified because we consider them stakeholders in this matter and we want to ensure that they have the relevant information when the road naming policy is formulated,” the minister said.
The Public Planning Department and the Development Advisory Council (DAC) will jointly be responsible for the implementation of this policy and work has already begun to implement the initiative as soon as possible.
