Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won an Olympic record gold medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics and set a second historic record on the Diamond League stage in Rome.
Yawi, 24, finished the race in 8 minutes 44.39 seconds, just seven percent away from the world record set by Kenyan athlete Beatrice Chepkoech in Monaco in 2018. Tokyo Olympic champion Perus Chemutai of Uganda also performed well, setting a historic third place in 8 minutes 48.03 seconds.
Jamaican Akela Nugent won the women’s 100m hurdles in a season-best and national record of 12.24, the fourth-best result ever. Nugent was followed by reigning Olympic champion Marcel Russell of the United States (12.31) and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands (12.52).
Lezier Tebogo, who won the men’s 100m gold medal in Paris, reaffirmed his dominance in Rome with a time of 9.87. The 10-second mark was also broken by Americans Christian Coleman (9.92) and Fred Klee (9.95).
Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh took first place in the men’s discus with a best of 68.61. Paris Olympic champion Roger Stoner of Jamaica (67.85) was second, and world record holder Mikolas Alekner of Lithuania was third (67.68).
Andy Diaz Hernandez delighted the home crowd by taking first place in the men’s triple jump with a score of 17.32. Italian track and field superstar, high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi, tied for third place with Oleh Doroshchuk of Ukraine (both 2.27). South Korean Sang-hyeok Woo (2.30) became the champion, while Jamaican Romaine Beckford (2.30) improved her personal record to take second place.
