Palestinian sources said that Israeli forces attacked the northern, central and southern Palestinian enclave of Gaza early yesterday morning, killing nearly 20 people, including children.
The attack came as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to the region to try to broker a ceasefire after months of contentious negotiations.
The United States and remaining mediators Egypt and Qatar said they were close to a deal after two days of negotiations with US and Israeli authorities in Doha, but Hamas showed resistance and condemned Israel’s new demands yesterday.
At least four Palestinians died in the northern Jabaliya refugee camp, established by the United Nations in 1948 to house displaced Palestinians. Israeli planes bombed two apartments, Palestinian agency Wafa reported, adding that rescue teams were searching the rubble for victims.
Four other Palestinians were killed last night in the city of Deir al-Balah in the heart of the Gaza Strip when a house in the south of the city was attacked, while a woman and a girl died east of Khan Younis when the house belonging to the Musbbeh family was bombed, according to Palestinian sources.
Al Jazeera reported that Israeli warplanes struck a residential building in the Nusserat refugee camp (center), killing seven other people, including three children.
According to the Army, Israeli 98th Division troops continued operations in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, clearing rocket launchers and weapons, including explosive grenades and Kalashnikov submachine guns.
Also in Rafah (south), according to a military statement released yesterday, they claimed to have eliminated about 20 militias “above ground and below ground”.
Ongoing genocide
Israel has continued its offensive in the Gaza Strip for 317 consecutive days, with the death toll exceeding 40,000, ignoring the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered Israel to avoid genocide in its military offensive in Rafah.
At least 10,000 Palestinians are estimated to be missing and more than 92,500 injured. In total, nearly 2.3 million people are displaced in the Gaza Strip. Protracted negotiations have repeatedly stalled in a war that has caused a humanitarian disaster.
The current proposal calls for a three-phase process in which Hamas would release all hostages kidnapped in the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the deadliest war ever between Israel and the Palestinians.
In return, Israel would withdraw its troops from Gaza and release prisoners. Experts warn of starvation and outbreaks of diseases such as polio.
