India’s capital New Delhi recorded a record temperature of 49.9 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the local meteorological department reported. They recorded the record temperature at two monitoring stations in the suburbs of Narela and Mongeshpur.
Similar temperatures are expected on Wednesday. Hot summer temperatures are common in India, but researchers say climate change is leading to longer, more frequent and more intense heat waves.
Authorities in New Delhi have also warned of the risk of water shortages. Supplies have already been disrupted in some areas. The minister in charge, Aatish Marina, called on residents to take a “collective responsibility” to stop wasting water, The Times of India reported.
In May 2022, 49.2 degrees Celsius was measured in some parts of the capital.
