“Building always takes longer than destroying”, this is the summary of the letter received from Emmanuel Macron in New Caledonia on the morning of Tuesday, June 18. The letter is addressed to the elected officials of the territory and is a new call for dialogue that will not leave people without a response.
In his letter, the President of the Republic first recalled the main stages in the history of New Caledonia: the Matignon Accords of 1988, followed by the Nouméa Accords of 1998. The moments of reconciliation he described have now vanished:On May 13th, a wire broke; a book patiently woven since 1988 by people who knew that words are always better than dead ones.“
Today, I await a firm and clear lifting of all obstacles and a condemnation of violence without excuse. The situation of declining numbers in New Caledonia remains unacceptable and those who encourage it must be held accountable for their actions.

In this letter, the President recalls the State’s commitment to the reconstruction of the territory. Emmanuel Macron calls on Caledonians to “Don’t give in to stress and discouragement, but stand up and rebuild.”
The need to resume dialogue is mentioned several times in the document.
This dialogue must make it possible to define a social project common to all citizens of New Caledonia, while respecting their history, their own identity and their aspirations. This project, based on trust, recognition of the dignity of every person, justice and equality, should provide a perspective for the youth of New Caledonia.

After receiving the letter this morning, Loyalists and Assembly elected officials felt that the document was far from the reality of the territory. They mentioned that “Worrying disconnection“.
The only national priority should be to restore security throughout the territory. However, to our great dismay, the President of the Republic has adopted a naive approach to the Caledonian issue.
