The Financial Times quoted sources as saying that Apple may be sued by the EU for failing to comply with the Digital Markets Directive (DMA) that has recently come into effect. In addition, Reuters quoted sources as saying that Facebook’s (fb) parent company Meta will also be sued by the EU for violating relevant laws.

The DMA requires large Internet companies to set up their own network operations to give smaller Internet companies sufficient competitiveness. The relevant department of the European Commission responsible for DMA enforcement began to review Apple, Meta and Alphabet’s Google in March to see whether they comply with DMA laws.

Sources pointed out that law enforcement agencies are currently prioritizing Apple and Meta for review, and a preliminary ruling is expected in August. For the time being, Apple will be the first company to be fined for operational issues with its app store. The next step will be to evaluate whether its voice assistance system Safari does not comply with DMA regulations. The second company to be fined is Meta, which is related to its charging operation model.

The law enforcement agency will make a final ruling before November. The two companies may be fined up to 10% of their total revenue. If the two companies are dissatisfied, they will file a lawsuit to challenge the decision of the authorities.

The European Commission and Meta did not respond to media inquiries. Apple said it is confident that law enforcement agencies will find that the company complies with DMA regulations after review.
