The Israeli prime minister added that every country in the region that has normalized relations with Israel should call for joining the military alliance, saying that with Israel’s victory in Gaza and its “demilitarization and de-radicalization,” there will be a “secure future and prosperity and peace.”

“Today we meet at the crossroads of history. Our world is in chaos. In the Middle East, the Iranian axis of terror faces the United States, Israel and our Arab friends. This is not a clash of civilizations. This is a clash of barbarism and civilization. This is a clash between those who glorify death and those who dedicate themselves to life. For the forces of civilization to prevail, the United States and Israel must unite.” Netanyahu received bipartisan applause from Congress before his speech.

Netanyahu has been heavily criticized for the high number of Palestinian civilian casualties and faces growing domestic and international pressure to reach a deal with Hamas to release the remaining hostages in exchange for a temporary halt to the fighting.

Before the Israeli prime minister spoke, hundreds of protesters gathered near the US Capitol to condemn Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, and police were forced to use tear gas, according to US media reports.

Demonstrators chanted “Free, free Palestine” before Israel’s prime minister was due to speak, with some attempting to block streets around the Capitol.

Netanyahu is the first world leader to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress four times, most recently in 2015 when he tried to convince lawmakers to end the Obama administration’s negotiations with Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program.
