Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said there was no impropriety in the Constituent Assembly approving the appointment of Mr Deshbandu Tennakone as Inspector General of Police.
He also pointed out that without this procedure, it would be impossible to remove from the Constituent Assembly those who were appointed on the advice of the Chief Executive.
He also said that the President has also reached the point of being powerless to appoint the Inspector General of Police in an electoral situation and that his situation is the same as before.
Therefore, he said anyone can approach the court to reinvestigate the matter regarding the appointment of the Inspector General of Police.
The Speaker made a special statement in Parliament today on the Supreme Court order suspending Mr. Deshbandhu Tannakun from the post of Inspector General of Police and appointing an Acting Inspector General of Police.
