From August 1 to 7, nearly 843,000 tourists entered Macau, an average of about 120,000 per day. The number of tourists received in the first seven days of August increased by more than 14% year-on-year, an average increase of more than 20,000 people compared with July.
Data released yesterday by the Tourism Services Bureau (DST) showed Macau’s popularity as a summer tourist destination between August 1 and 7, with provisional data from the DST showing that nearly 843,000 tourists arrived in Macau, an average of 120,000 tourists per day, an annual increase of 14.3%.
“With the arrival of the summer tourist peak season, the number of visitors to tourist attractions and sites in various districts of Macau has continued to increase, showing a growing desire among tourists to visit Macau,” said the group yesterday, which is led by De Heeren Senna Fernandez.
The government stressed that about 152,000 tourists entered Macau on the first Saturday of this month, which is the highest number of tourists since the beginning of summer. Compared with the highest number of arrivals on the day of summer 2019, the record was only 3,000. On July 27, the number of tourists entering Macau reached 155,000, accounting for 97.8% of the busiest day.
On the same day, the number of people entering and leaving the port reached a new high of 717,197, the highest number on record, but this also reflects the flow of residents entering and leaving Macau to Zhuhai.
The DST also highlighted that the average number of registered tourists in the first seven days of August increased by more than 20,000 from the daily average of nearly 98,000 recorded last month.
Yesterday, provisional data on tourist arrivals in July were also updated. In the past month, Macau received 3.028 million tourists, an increase of 9.7% over the previous year, recovering to 85.8% of the level in July 2019.
Preferential measures
The DST explained the results for the first seven days of August with various “preferential measures” approved by the central government, such as expanding the number of Chinese cities authorized to issue individual security passes to enter the special administrative region and raising the duty-free limit for products that tourists can carry in their personal luggage.
Additionally, DST highlighted its various promotional activities to attract tourists, namely events that bring visitors to the community.
