Aaron, July 22, 2024 (NHK News) – The leader of Nauru told NHK the reasons why the South Pacific island nation recently severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan and established diplomatic relations with China.
President David Adeang is in Tokyo for a meeting of Pacific Island leaders hosted by Japan every three years.
Nauru established diplomatic relations with China in January and severed ties with Taiwan. Fellow Pacific island nations Solomon Islands and Kiribati followed suit in 2019.
“We believe that by working with China this time, we will be on the right side of history,” Adeang said on Friday.
He went on to say that China’s economy cannot be ignored and that China has a wealth of technology that can support the development of small island nations.
Nauru has a population of just over 12,000.
Adeang said the port reconstruction project, led by China and supported by the Asian Development Bank, is expected to be completed by the middle of next year at the latest.
He said Nauru’s infrastructure needed to be improved and described the plan as a “very exciting and transformative project for the people”. …PACNEWS
