NATO decides to establish Ukraine headquarters in Wiesbaden

In the future, NATO will coordinate weapons deliveries and training activities for the Ukrainian Armed Forces from Wiesbaden. The heads of state and government of the member states decided to launch this operation at a summit in Washington, DPA news agency learned from alliance circles. It is scheduled to start on Friday.
“The aim is to provide enduring security support to Ukraine, thereby ensuring improved, predictable and coherent support,” the summit statement on the new command said. It will also support the transformation of Ukraine’s defence and security forces, thereby further integrating Ukraine into NATO.
So far, the United States has taken the lead in coordinating weapons deliveries and training activities. At the end of 2022, they established a force of about 300 soldiers at the European headquarters of the US Armed Forces in Wiesbaden, Hesse, called the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U). NATO will now have about 700 employees, and Germany hopes to hire up to 40 employees, including a two-star general as deputy commander.
The NATO project is also seen as a precautionary measure in the event that Donald Trump could return to the US presidency from January 2025. Past statements by the Republican have raised doubts about whether the US will continue its defensive war against Ukraine. His leadership is as strong as ever against Russia. The alliance fears that political changes in Washington could also affect the coordination of weapons deliveries and training activities of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Only Hungary will not take part in the operation. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government fears that the NSATU (NATO Security Assistance and Training Ukraine) Command could push the alliance into a direct confrontation with Russia. “The NATO alliance will not become a party to the conflict in the sense of international law,” the summit declaration states.
