NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday called on China to face consequences if it continues to support Russia, accusing Beijing of escalating the war in Ukraine while seeking to improve ties with the West.
Stoltenberg stressed at the Wilson Center in Washington: “China cannot have it both ways. The West must make China pay a price at some point. Unless China changes its course, there will inevitably be consequences.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said continued Western arms supplies to Ukraine were essential to achieving peace there after Kiev refused to bow to Russian demands.
“It may seem contradictory, but the path to peace is to provide Ukraine with more weapons,” Stoltenberg explained.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, is due to travel to North Korea on Tuesday and Wednesday, a rare visit to one of the world’s most isolated countries, which the West accuses of providing Moscow with ammunition to continue its attack on Ukraine.
The two countries, which are subject to extensive international sanctions, have strengthened relations since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
The Kremlin announced in a statement that “at the invitation of Kim Jong-un, Vladimir Putin will pay a friendly state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from June 18 to 19, 2024.” This was news confirmed by Pyongyang through the official North Korean news agency.
