President Nayib Bukele reported that the Salvadoran National Navy intercepted a vessel 610 nautical miles southwest of Bocana El Cordoncillo in Estero de Jaltepeque and seized new drugs.
The ship, which had three Ecuadorian crew members on board and was estimated to be carrying about 750 kilograms of cocaine worth nearly $19 million, has been detained by authorities.
“If they think that international waters are a safe route for transporting drugs to other countries, they are wrong. We have an exemplary national navy in the region and they continue to fight drug trafficking with strong actions and results,” said Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro.
The President also reported that the operation was another in a series of important seizures carried out by the nation’s navy in recent weeks.
On June 24, a low-profile vessel carrying a Colombian and two Ecuadorians was intercepted 630 nautical miles from the same location. The vessel was carrying approximately two tons of cocaine with an estimated value of US$50 million.
Earlier, on June 4, another ship was intercepted 805 nautical miles from Bocana El Codongiro, carrying a ton of cocaine worth $25 million. All the crew members were Ecuadorians and were arrested.
On May 24, an unprecedented operation was conducted 882 nautical miles from the coast, resulting in the seizure of 1.4 tons of cocaine, valued at $35 million. The seizure was the furthest from the coast of El Salvador to date. During the operation, a drug trafficker was shot dead after a confrontation with sailors.
On May 19, another operation was conducted 880 nautical miles southwest of El Codiro, Bocana, and 1.3 tons of cocaine worth $32.5 million were seized. In addition to the main ship, another ship that received the drugs was found, and three Mexican crew members were found on board.
In total, these operations, conducted over the past seven weeks, have seized more than $160 million worth of drugs.
