Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah congratulated Iranian President-elect Massoud Pezeshkian and stressed Iran’s strong support for regional resistance groups.
In a letter shared on Hezbollah’s social media channels, Nasrallah praised Pezeshkian’s election as “blessed by the Iranian people.”
“In Hezbollah and among all resistance groups in the region, we always see the Islamic Republic of Iran as a strong, stable and enduring supporter,” the letter reads.
Iran provides economic and military aid to Hezbollah, which was founded with the help of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards after Israel invaded Beirut during the Lebanese civil war in 1982.
Hezbollah is a core component of the so-called resistance axis, an alliance of pro-Iranian armed groups opposed to Israel and the United States that includes the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Yemen’s Houthi rebels and various fighters in Iraq.
Reformist candidate Pezeshkian, who supports better ties with the West, wins presidential runoff be opposed to Iran’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday that ultraconservative Saeed Jalili also took part.
The election is taking place against the backdrop of the Gaza conflict, the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program and rising economic tensions within Iran over sanctions.
The election was triggered by the death of ultra-conservative President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, and the next presidential election was originally scheduled for 2025.
Since the day after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, sparking the Gaza conflict, Hezbollah has been conducting regular cross-border exchanges with the Israeli army in support of Hamas.
Hezbollah is the only armed faction to retain heavy weapons after Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war. Party members are also active in Syria’s civil war, supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who also congratulated Iran on Saturday on his election as president.
