Nankhumwa claims Chilima wants to withdraw from election case and reconcile with APM – Malawi Nyasa Times

The Peoples Democratic Party chairman, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has said the late Saulos Chilima wanted to withdraw from the Constitutional Electoral Tribunal case and reconcile with former President Peter Mutharika.

In an interview with Zodiak TV on Sunday, Nankhumwa claimed that Noel Masangwi (now of UTM) called him and told him that SKC was desperately looking for him. At that time, the Constitutional Court case was ongoing and the massive demonstrations led by HRDC were ongoing.

He further stated that SKC had secretly approached APM for a settlement when the court case was still going on (now you can recall the rumors that SKC had once heard about its withdrawal from the case).

Nankhumwa was the middleman in the negotiations with APM, which agreed but put forward three conditions.

1. SkC must stop the lawsuit.
2. SKC must hold a press conference and condemn the mass demonstrations.
3. SKC must not participate in future large-scale demonstrations.

According to Nankhumwa, SKC agreed, but he proposed some minor changes. Here are his conditions:

1. Not only will the court case not be stopped, but UTM will not provide any more witnesses in the case.
2. He will no longer personally participate in large-scale demonstrations. According to Nankhumwa, SKC believes that this will reduce people’s interest in the demonstrations and will make them lose Chikoka. I must say at the outset that this is an overestimation of his influence in the demonstrations, because he did not initiate the demonstrations in the first place. He only participated for a few days when the demonstrations were already volatile.
3. The condition attached was that SKC did not want to be Mutharika’s running mate. Instead, according to Nankhumwa, SKC asked to be posted as a diplomat to the United Nations in New York.
