Experts say these changes in Trump’s speech could be due to benign changes, such as a change in mood, or serious changes, such as the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease. Social psychologist James Pennebaker conducted a statistical analysis of Trump’s speech transcripts from 2015 to 2024 and found clear differences in the way the former president and the felon speak.

Pennebaker, the University of Texas at Austin professor, found an increase in Trump’s “all-or-nothing thinking,” using words like “always,” “never” and “completely.” Pennebaker said that, along with his decreased use of positive words and increased references to negative emotions, could be signs of depression.

Pennebaker added that a sharp increase in all-or-nothing thinking is associated with cognitive decline. “Another person who has seen an increase in all-or-nothing thinking is Biden,” he said.
