NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Nadal is on the U.S. Open entry list released Tuesday because of his protected ranking, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Spanish star will play in the final Grand Slam of the year.
Nadal, who has been plagued by injuries and has played sporadically over the past two seasons, played his first match in a month and a half this week in Bastad, Sweden.
On Monday, he won his doubles match against Casper Ruud. A day later, he defeated Leo Borg, son of former tennis player Bjorn Borg, in singles.
Nadal, 38, has won four of his 22 Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Open, which opens on August 26. He was crowned there in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
He has missed the tournament in three of the last four years, and in 2022 he lost in the fourth round.
Nadal will participate in the Paris Olympics, and the tennis competition will start at Roland Garros, the same venue as the French Open, on July 27. However, it is not known how many matches the Spaniard will be able to play after that.
The United States Tennis Association has released its list of registered singles men and women, and as of Monday, bae has entered the WTA and ATP rankings. The leaders of these levels are Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Italian Jannik Sinner.
New York’s two defending champions, native Coco Gauff and Serbian Novak Djokovic, are currently ranked second.
The draw to determine the U.S. Open keys will be held on August 22.
